Cry But Shop!

The best-kept secret in marketing is... **NOSTALGIA**, and the reason is just plain common sense. The dearest memories always live in people's hearts. In a content-flooded world, the marketing battle is fiercer than "The Hunger Games".

Speaking of which, "The Hunger Games" is a prime example. Take a story you've already read (yes, I'm wildly assuming you're a bookworm), a story that captivated you, and then reinvent it into a new prequel that nobody asked for. This applies splendidly to advertising too. Notable examples include Walmart's new ad inspired by "Mean Girls" or ET reuniting with Elliot, Alexander Wang's campaign featuring Naomi Campbell, or even H&M recreating Paco Rabanne's iconic dress in their latest collab.

Why exploit nostalgia?

You save a budget because you don't have to pour money into an unknown advertising concept. Exploiting nostalgia equals major budget savings.

How to apply this to personal projects without spending $$$$$?

You can't. If you could, you wouldn't be reading this email. But there are special moments we all connect with, like Christmas, New Year's, or Thanksgiving. I'd suggest looking within these moments for more specific situations that remind us of someone or something, and develop your storytelling, promotion, or advertising around it. For example:

- Getting an unwanted gift in a Secret Santa.

- Turning up in a ball gown to a jeans-and-tee party.

- Hating Christmas like the Grinch.

As always, we're here to give you brilliant ideas when you need them.
